SARASOTA, FL: While he did not realize it at the time, Sarasota resident, and former Navy pilot Bill “Flash” Gordon was involved in an incident that may have helped shorten World War II. On the night of June 23, 1944 the Torpedo Bomber Squadron group VC69 took off from the aircraft carrier the USS Bogue and shortly thereafter intercepted a rendezvous between a German and Japanese submarine the I-52. An attack ensued and the Japanese submarine was sunk deep off the coast of the Cape Verde Islands Only until recently, did the surviving crewmembers of VC69 learn that the Japanese submarine was carrying 2 tons of gold that was to be exchanged with the Germans for wartime technology. A maritime researcher, Paul Tidwell discovered the story reviewing the National Archives in Washington DC and hired a salvage company to locate the ship. After a number of years of research and fundraising to finance the search, the long lost submarine “gold intact” was found. An expedition to raise the sub with an estimated $25 million in gold is scheduled for as early as next spring. National Geographic and some of the VC69 crewmembers will accompany expedition to chronicle the effort. An update regarding the salvage effort will be presented to the crew during the reunion. VC69 will be holding its reunion at the Lido Beach Holiday Inn starting on Thursday, October 1 through Saturday, October 3, 2006. Bill Gordon will renew old friendships, talk over old times and know more that ever that the sacrifices he and his VC69 Squadron made during World War II were well worth the effort. | BROOKDALE PROGRAM A BIG SUCCESS! On Thursday evening, February 27, 2003, Brookdale Community College’s Center for World War II Studies and Conflict Resolution sponsored an evening with Brookdale English Professor Marc Bonagura and five veterans of the Guadalcanal Campaign: Sam Stanislao, John Setteducati, Dave Weinstein and Jerry Federico.Well over 50 people attended the lecture/discussion. The veterans were accompanied by their wives Julie Stanislao, Florence Setteducati, Alice Weinstein and Evonne Federico. The program lasted over an hour and a half with the Guadalcanal vets serving as a panel, commenting and answering questions from the audience. It was a rare opportunity for these men to get together, some of whom haven’t seen each other in 60 years! The veterans were picked up at their homes by limousine service and driven to the college in Lincroft, New Jersey where they enjoyed an informal dinner at the Brookdale Community College Student Center before attending the event. Brookdale College’s Paul Zigo, Director of Off Campus Services and the Director of the World War II Center, acted as emcee for the event, which was also attended by Brookdale Vice President Dr. Johanna Kobran.
